In the Catholic Church, Holy Orders is the sacrament of apostolic ministry, through which men are ordained as bishops, priests, or deacons, continuing the mission Christ entrusted to the apostles. The three degrees of Holy Orders are the episcopate (bishops), presbyterate (priests), and diaconate (deacons). The sacrament is conferred by a bishop through the laying on of hands and the invocation of the Holy Spirit, leaving an indelible mark on the ordained minister’s soul and marking a lifelong commitment.
